SUMMERSIDE - In an all-Island girls' final in the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club's fourth annual Maritime Junior Fall Fling cashspiel, the Sarah Fullerton rink from the Cornwall Curling Club defeated the Anita Casey foursome from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club 6-3.
Fullerton, the reigning 17-and-under women's provincial and Atlantic champion, third stone Michelle McQuaid, second stone Whitney Young and lead Sara MacRae led Casey 4-2 heading into the sixth end, giving up only one point in the next four ends to take the win.
It was Fullerton's first bonspiel win of the year.
"We knew the other team was going to be strong," said Fullerton. "They are definitely one of our top contenders for provincials this year.
"We knew we had to play our best. We got two or more points with every hammer we had, which was our main goal."
Twenty-four teams from across the Maritimes participated in the annual event, which featured more than $2,000 in cash prizes.
Boys
It was a rematch of the 2008 boys' final, with the Colten Steele rink once again walking away victorious.
Steele, third stone Travis Colter, second stone Michael Brophy and lead Ben Creaser, based out of the Dartmouth Curling Club, edged the Silver Fox Curling Club's Sam Ramsay 8-7 in the championship.
It was a back-and-forth match as Ramsay, needing a deuce to force an extra end, had to settle for a single point with last-rock advantage in the 10th end.
"We got off to a bad start," said Steele. "The first two ends we gave up a steal of three and a steal of one.
"But we kind of game together as a team and brought our stuff back and played how we had been in the previous games in the weekend, and ended up pulling together in the end."
Steele said the ice was quick with consistent "real nice curl," which helped in the win. The turning point for his rink was in the fourth end where they gained three points and "got our momentum up."
