United States off to semifinals

SUMMERSIDE -- The United States has advanced to the semifinals of the 2009 World Junior 'A' Hockey Challenge.

The defending champions of the 19-and-under tournament defeated Sweden 3-1 in a quarter-final game Thursday afternoon.

The United States will face Russia on Friday at 2 p.m.

Nick Jensen (4:06), David Girths (8:20) and Shane Berschbach (15:35) scored second-period goals to stake the United States to a 3-0 lead.

Sweden's Adam Almquist spoiled the shutout bid of United States goaltender Eric Mihalik 4:29 of the third period.

Overall, the United States outshot Sweden 36-29.

Mihalik and Sweden goaltender Jonas Gunnarsson were named players of the game.

Tonight, Canada West takes on Belarus in the second quarter-final at 7 p.m. The winner of that game will meet Canada East in the second semifinal on Friday at 7 p.m.
