About Newspapers in Education

Newspapers in Education is a program designed to promote and enhance the use of newspapers in the classroom.  This inexpensive and always up to date text can be used for any grade level or subject area.  The newspaper gives students a daily lesson in geography, economics, math, technology, science and social studies.  It provides real life and real time lessons from right in their own backyard, or can take students around the world.

Newspapers are just the beginning of the NIE experience. We provide teachers at all levels, from kindergarten to adult education, with the tools to provide new ideas and programs that they can use in the classroom.  Most importantly, NIE programs have been proven to improve reading and writing skills in students and young people who read the newspaper regularly are more likely to vote, volunteer and engage in community expression.

Journal Pioneer summer reading program

  • Newspapers are an adult medium. Students are proud to be seen reading the newspaper.

  • A newspaper deals in reality, in what is happening here and now. Motivation for reading and for discussions are built-in.

    • Students who use newspapers in the classroom tend to talk with their peers and their parents about what they read.

    • It bridges the gap between the classroom and the "real" world outside.

    • Newspaper use in classes increases students’ interest in and knowledge of current events.

You can help

Donate your newspapers to NIE while you are on vacation

You can make a difference to local schools with this generous gesture.
When you call the Journal Pioneer to stop your paper during vacation time, ask our representative to donate the cost of your paper to Newspapers in Education.  We will put the value of your newspapers into our NIE fund used to provide the Journal Pioneer to local classrooms at no charge.  For each newspaper you donate, you put 4 papers into a local classroom. Our students are the winners!

To make a vacation donation call the circulation desk at 432-8208.
