Do Violent Video Games Lead to Violent Behaviour?; MacPhee

I absolutely love video games. Ask anyone who knows me; they'll probably try to make some kind of joke regarding how much of a gaming nut I am. I'm extremely opposed to people who accuse violent games as being a sort of hub for turning people into aggressive killers. I simply can't agree with any of it.

If I'm playing any game, whether it's a platformer, a puzzle game, or a shooting game, I play them all for the same reason: I want to survive in an environment that I have complete self-control over. That's pretty much it: In Mario, I dodge Koopas. In Tetris, I keep blocks away from the top of the screen, and in shooting games, I kill dudes. If any of you have played any video games, I'm sure we can all agree that this is the reason we play: we're given a challenge, and we'll do what we can to overcome it; it's human nature, and it's satisfying to do so, especially when there's a challenge! I don't see why violent video games should be looked at so seriously, when it's still all in harmless fun, at the end of the day.

Let me make a gutsy observation here: coming off of the logic that violent video games give you the immersion and teaching to do violent things, shouldn't that conclude that physical sports are even worse for this? These sorts of sports would teach you a heck of a lot more about how to injure somebody, and not to mention that they'd put you into the physical condition to do so. By comparison, that sounds much more dangerous than a video game, and since we all know that rugby players don't randomly act hostile toward other people, it should be safe to say that the aspect of simulation is no longer a good excuse.

My conclusion is this: violent video games do not lead to violent behaviour. I just don't see the full-circle connections here. All gamers know that games aren't real, we've learned since an early age not to go around and shoot people with guns, and pressing the right trigger to shoot and the X-button to reload doesn't tell us anything about operating a real gun.

I don't see any opposing angle here, and it seems as though mountains are being made from molehills with this subject; video games are large-scale reflex and problem-solving tests that are sold at the local Wal-Mart, next to the DVDs and music CDs. It doesn't come off as a very threatening product.

    Will, I completely agree with you. Many stories I have read where they found video games to be the problem, such as this "http://www.destructoid.com/man-kills-his-son-over-a-missing-videogame-facepalm--153137.phtml," they put video games in the title even though the man was drunk. For all we know the man could of had past anger issues or even have been a bit on the insane side. I have played video games since I was about 5 or and I have never done anything criminal like run over pedestrians, give a fatality to someone, or even to go as far as destroy an entire city. I have played very violent games such as Mortal Kombat, Grand Theft Auto, even the overally banned Manhunt; none that have cause me to become violent. Great article.
