Seeking help identifying marine creature

Topics :
Veterinary College , Charlottetown

SUMMERSIDE-Marilyn Simmons never expected this.

On Thursday afternoon she was walking along the boardwalk near the Shipyard with her mother, Marie Pridham, when she spotted gulls at the edge of the water, pecking at something.

Simmons investigated and was surprised to find a decomposing marine creature she could not identify, draped in seaweed.

It was the creature's massive head and eye sockets, or perhaps blow holes, which first caught her attention.

"It looks like it's been severed - like somebody cut its' head off," said Simmons.

A branch could not free the sodden carcass from clinging sand and seaweed.

"There's a vet clinic (Atlantic Veterinary College) in Charlottetown, surely they would have some idea what might be swimming around the waters of P.E.I.," she said.

Simmons poked gingerly at the creature's remains.

"It looks like pin feathers here and then the jaw where the teeth are really tiny.

"Whether it's a fish or a dolphin, I have no idea. Some kind of bird, perhaps?"

But answers, for now, remain elusive.

Maybe it's a sabre tooth salmon, or a man-eatin' mackerel.....

OK Jim now come on!! I told you it had teeth, so it can't be a bird! haha! I just can't figure out what those spines are, they look like pin feathers. I has to be a tuna or something.
