OTTAWA - Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean has announced 57 new appointments to or within the Order of Canada.
Hockey great Mario Lemieux, music legends Burton Cummings of the Guess Who and Neil Young, and filmmaker Ivan Reitman were named officers of the order.
Former New Democrat leader Alexa McDonough and former clerk of the Privy Council Mel Cappe were also named officers of the order.
New members of the order include aboriginal actress Tantoo Cardinal and former Montreal Canadians captain Emile "Butch" Bouchard, who led the Habs to four Stanley Cups and recently had his No. 3 jersey retired.
The Order of Canada is one of the country's highest civilian honours, and was established in 1967 to mark a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to the nation.
Over the last 40 years, more than 5,000 people from all walks of life have been appointed into the order.
