MacLellan chosen to pen PEI song

SUMMERSIDE -- Summerside's Catherine MacLellan has been one of 13 Canadian artists chosen to write a song about a Canadian location in the CBC Radio2 contest, SongQuest.

The Prince County artist has been chosen to write about a Kings County locale -- Singing Sands Beach.

Musical genres as varied as the landscape among the 13 Canadian locations and 13 songwriters who will sing about them.

Folk band Oh Susanna will sing about Tofino, B.C. and indie rockers Hey Rosetta! will grind out a tribute to Newfoundland's Gros Morne National Park, among the winning locales and artists unveiled Monday.

"It's a thrill to see the final locations that Canadians have chosen, as well as revealing the artists who will create the 13 new pieces," said Mark Steinmetz, director of music programming at CBC Radio.

Canadians selected among the top nominations from each province and territory on CBC's contest website after an active period of Internet campaigning.

The artists are given four weeks to write and record the songs inspired by the selected locales. The new originals songs will be unveiled o CBC radio on Nov. 23.
