Tignish Credit Union is expanding its operation to the Tignish Post Office building.
Credit Union manager Louis Shea said the commercial loans department will be moving to the second floor of the post office building once renovations there are completed.
Shea said the credit union executive and administration were discussing expansion even before work on the post office commenced.
"We need more space," he said.
All other services, including regular counter service for commercial loans, will continue to be provided in the credit union building.
"It'll be beautiful inside, once they get it back to the way it was," Shea said of the space available on the second floor of the heritage building. "It's good to see it put to use."
Tignish Initiatives undertook a major renovation project at the post office last fall. General contractor Perry's Construction recently completed an elevator shaft, a necessary step in making the second floor of the building wheelchair accessible.
Shea said the credit union will likely rent all of the second floor. About four credit union staff members will be relocated there, but Shea is not expecting much of a change in overall staffing numbers.
The credit union has been in its present location since 1970. The building was expanded in the early 1990s.
Anne Arsenault, manager of Tignish Initiatives, said the credit union will become the first tenant on the second floor of the post office in more than a decade. Work on the heritage building is progressing well, she said estimating the project is nearly at the halfway point.
