SUMMERSIDE - Turbines at the St. Eleanors wind farm could be churning out power as early as next week.
There will be a citywide power outage on Thursday morning from 2 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. to bring the system on line, according to Summerside Chief Administrative Officer Terry Murphy.
"It is a big job," Murphy said.
"If everything goes okay . . . we're hoping to have everything completed in the morning. If not, we'll be continuing on with it through the week, not with shutdowns but with testing and then we'll start up in the New Year."
Work Thursday will involve connections between the wind farm where the distribution line comes into the Ottawa Street substation, as well as getting controls ready in the substation. As well, the tie-in between Maritime Electric and the substation will be dealt with.
Murphy's optimistic it can all be brought together this week. Crews will be ensuring all protocols required for the safe operation of the substation are in place and working before any power is generated.
"It's a big job and there are a lot of controls that have to be set and tested - we'll start bringing the wind mills on after that. It will probably take about a day a wind mill to get it started."
Murphy said once they are operating, all the energy will be delivered to the Summerside Electric Utility.
"We take all the energy that we can use at any point in time and then the rest we would sell to New Brunswick Power."

    Never Have Say Anyways

Won't much matter what we think anyways as we never have any say in the long rung
The City will be run the way the Powers to Be decide
Most likely the reason for doing it in the middle of the week is to say on overtime pay for the staff

I totally agree with Angela & Ann - posting someone's personal information is not at all professional
Phone numbers etc. show us the people there is little discretion & hopefully it doesn't happen in every aspect of the running of the City

I received the following e-mail this morning and this is the only individual whom I spoke to, thus it must be this John individual. I told him that the monies that we receive would go into the theoretical debt of the Credit Union Place. This debt is $30 m and was planned and is presently covered through our general fund. We received $22 million from other levels of government for the wind farm project. We would not have received this funding if we didn't have this wind farm project thus that is why I referred to it as theoretical. The monies that are derived from the wind farm will be going into city infrastructure and at the same time we will be keeping the quarters in the City instead of shipping them off island. Hope this explains the issue. br br br From: s204cc [mailto:s204cc@busdep.com] br Sent: Wednesday, December 16, 2009 11:36 AM br To: Terry Murphy br Subject: Wind Turbines br br Good Morning Terry, br br I'm a resident of Summerside and in discussions today I have learned that we as residents of Summerside will not be recieving any cost cutting to our monthly bills after these wind turbines have been put into place. Why is that? It was our tax dollars that have made it possible for those to be put up. And then the city yet again gives nothing back to the community, but you guys have no problem selling the excess power/wattage that these turbines produce to New Brunswick. br br I do not figure to get a response to this email, and that is fine. But I just wanted my voice to be heard on how you can take our money to help the city make more of it and we get nothing in return . br br If you could clarify that would be great br br Thanks br Gian Martinson br Copy Center br SAVE TIME. Confusing?
    - June 21st, 2010 at 19:07:14

I don't know much about this electrical grid system but why would S'side sell surplus to NB Power and not PEI Maritme electric? Would'nt NB Power simply sell it back to PEI. Confusing indeed!

I am surprised that schools wont be closed tomorrow because of this. Actually I am surprised school was not closed today because of the weather, usually any amount of snow and they are cancelling schools, oh its unsafe for the teachers to be on the road . gimme a break!

Terry Murphy already made it clear that Summerside residents won't see any decrease in their rates as Summerside matches their rates with Maritime Electric...really makes one think as how are we as residents of Summerside and the shareholders of this project are going to see any benefit or return on the project...as our tax dollars funded it?

After talking with Terry Murphy. I emailed him and he actually called me which was a shock that he called. But what he said was that the money that is generated by the wind turbines will go back into the community by paying off the Credit Union Place which according to him is in major debit.

Terry Murphy actually said that the Credit Union Place is a major debt? I thought that it was suppose to pay for itself in the long run. What a joke!!! Why not put that money into infrastructure.... new sewer lines, better roads etc. A 50 million dollar place for a popluation of 15000 people. get real Murphy!

    Why?
    - June 21st, 2010 at 19:04:29

Why can't the city do this process on the weekend instead of the middle of the workweek....there are less people needing to rely on their alarm clocks (of which most are digital) on the weekends as compared to mid-week.

Their last scheduled outage which didn't happen was early on a Sunday morning....why not this time?

Timing could be better to reduce inconvenience to the working class.

Some people can never be pleased no matter what the subject there is always something to complain about....why do some people always have to be so miserable and critical...
just be happy you live in a nice little city and if you don't like it move elsewhere

I was wondering the same thing as Angela and agree totally with her final comment.
Mr. Murphy appears to be living up to his reputation in the community.

    Not very smart, or professional!

Hey Nuggz Nuggz no one will have heat,(unless they have a wood stove) I have a oil fired furnace and it requires electricity to start. so just be glad you didn't post your real name and let everyone know just how silly you sound.

Are the windmills going to lower the cost of our monthly bill? Or will our bill go higher cause they will throw in some cost of operating, which will make our bill go through the roof?

The reason the City wants to do the work through the week is simple, it would cost more to do it on the weekend. It just wouldn't be right for Terry Murphy not nicle and dime a project. Kind of like hiring a building inspector to be project manager for the power line installation. It would have cost way too much to hire a qualified person to do the job.
