TIGNISH - This is a transition year for the Tignish Irish Moss Festival.
"We are building on some of the new events from last year," said committee chair Judy Morrissey-Richard, "because they were such a success."
And they are preparing for 30th anniversary celebrations in 2010.
The Character Breakfast, Garden Tea Party and Family Beach Days were popular additions last year and will be returning. There will be even more games and inflatables. Those attractions will include an actual NASCAR race car with simulator screen, pit stop challenge, gladiator cage and a pre-school bouncer.
The Irish Moss Festival has the distinction of getting the summer season underway in West Prince. It starts Wednesday and runs until June 28. Most indoor events will be held at Tignish Credit Union Arena. The Miss Irish Moss Festival Pageant promises to be a big attraction, with 17 girls entered. That's up from 10 last year.
For those who like to gamble a little, the Irish Moss Festival is introducing Viva Las Tignish. This casino night is sponsored by WestJet and they are providing a chance for someone to win two tickets to anywhere the airline flies. The licensed event will feature games of chance, like poker, roulette, cash box and Texas hold 'em. Just like that place with a similar sounding name, there will be show girls, a hypnotist and dancing. Rock Bottom and Junk Male will take turns providing the dance music.
Besides the airline tickets, numerous other prizes, including $2,500 cash, will be available to be won during the casino night.
Also new this year is Festival in Bloom. Area residents are encouraged to get their yards ready for judging. Prizes are available to be won. This event is a warm-up to the actual Communities in Bloom judging later in the summer.
The theme for the parade on the festival's final day, Athletes and Mascots, celebrates the fact that the Canada Games are being held in P.E.I. this year.
Other events this year include adventures with Dora and Diego and the Backyard Friends. Strong woman competition, Bingo, lobster suppers, horse pull and a festival-ending fireworks display.
Festival builds on its past successes

Just some info.... It is my right NOT to use my name, VERY rare do people put there names on these comments, Iam not alone with that 2) Alberton and Northport ARE NOT the same!! two different councils, residents of Noprthport DO NOT pay town tax in Alberton or do they vote in Alberton municipal elections etc. to my knowledge and I could be wrong, but the town of Alberton gives no financial support to Aquatics days (that I know of),.... Also to IN RESPONSE... thats your real name? you have no idea who I am or where I am from or anything about the 28 plus years I have volunteered to recreation and sport on PEI. My original quote is my opinion, I am allowed to have it, if people do not like it, don't read it and ignore the comments. Maybe I was harsh with the comments stated above, but many many many residents of Alberton are being much more harsh in the streets and coffee shops. Sorry if I offened anyone with my opinion.

Northport is like a 3 Minute WALK from Alberton, therefore I think we are safe to say Aquatic days can be considered an Alberton event. Surely you must have something better to do, if you're so concerned about the lack of events in the Alberton area why don't you make suggestions to the recreation department instead of wasting your time complaining.
