SUMMERSIDE - The Summerside Walmart store will soon be taking on a new look. Plans are in the works for a remodeling of the store into a "super centre" with a complete grocery section.

To do that, certain existing departments may see changes.

There are no plans to physically expand the store as the changes will be carried out within the existing space.

"We are looking at the departments in the store and we are moving them around and some of them will shrink in size a bit to accommodate bringing in the full grocery section," a Walmart spokesperson said. "You'll be able to get your fruit, vegetables, dairy and pre-cut meat. There will be some pre-cut deli as well."

Walmart does offer a limited selection in its grocery component but officials have decided to focus on providing a full grocery section.

There has been rumours circulating about the automotive section of the store being phased out, but the spokesperson could not confirm if that was in the plans.

"I haven't been able to get confirmation on that yet," she said. "I'm waiting for one of the real estate team members to get back to me."

Plans call for the changes to be completed by the winter of 2015.

THis is already the smallest WalMart I've already seen. While I welcome the addition of more grocery items, and the resulting competition to Sobeys and Superstore, to do so at the expense of other non-grocery items is ony going to serve to send Summerside residents to other geographic areas to shop. We have lots of groceries available to us already, it's the other items we can't get in Summerside!

This Walmart is the smallest because it is a training Walmart for managers to step in to bigger shoes. Regarding the merchandise. Do we really need 20 toasters to choose from? Or 45 different fishing rods? There is not too many items in Walmart that you can't get elsewhere other than clothes maybe, but we don't need 20 racks of pajamas either. Walmart is a staple in Summerside and hopefully is here to stay. I for one cannot wait to buy everything I need in the one store I shop most at. It is inconvenient to buy all my dry goods there and then have to run over to Superstore for fruits and veggies! Soon I can do it all at Walmart!

you whine about to many food stores in s'side. but i do not hear anyone whining about the 9 or more coffee hops in summerside. plus you have 2 drunk stores and I'm sure more to come to your local corner store.
