O’LEARY – Members of the Hernewood Intermediate School Girls AA Basketball team are helping O’Leary Farmers Co-operative shoppers with their groceries and the Co-op members, in return, are supporting the team.

Those involved in a recent fundraising event for the Hernewood Intermediate School Girls AA Basketball team included general manager of O’Leary Farmers Co-op, Darren MacKinnon; Janelle Perry, Maddy MacKinnon, and Jocelyn Jelley, Hernewood Huskies players; and Lincoln Rix, coach of Hernewood Huskies AA Girls Basketball.

Donations provided by the Co-op’s large membership will enable the students to attend an Atlantic basketball tournament to be held in Amherst, N.S., in February.

During one weekend before Christmas, members donated over $750 to the young girls’ basketball team.

Local teams get to experience the generosity of the Co-op members on a monthly basis as the store allows local youth groups to participate in grocery handling fundraisers at least once per month to help raise funds for youth in the area.

The Co-op’s general manager, Darren MacKinnon, comments, “The strength of our local community co-op is what sets us apart from other retailers in our area. Our membership is extremely strong and giving.

“Over the past year the co-op members have provided almost $7,000 to local youth in our area. This is an amazing demonstration of the strength of a Co-op.

“The Co-op way really is a better way,” he added.
