Restaurants feeling pressure to hike prices

The dough keeps rising, but so does its price. Dianna Doucette, an employee at Michael's Restaurant in Summerside, was hard at work on a fresh pizza pie recently. The restaurant's owner, Robert Gallant, says he'll soon have to increase the prices of his menu items by five per cent in order to stay afloat amid the rising cost of food. SUMMERSIDE – It's no secret that Islanders have been paying higher prices for food at the grocery stores, but some restaurant owners are feeling the pinch as well.

A confluence of factors - food shortages, rising fuel costs for shipping, increased payroll taxes - is forcing some eateries to raise prices on menu items.

Robert Gallant, owner of Michael's Pizzeria in Summerside, plans to increase prices of his menu items by five per cent this year.

He wants his customers to know that it's not a money grab, but simply the cost of staying in business.

"It's got nothing to do with me making more money, it's got everything to do with trying to keep afloat," Gallant said.

"It's all about the dollar now, trying to make a living. I want to stay here, but there's a cost to all these fees that I have to pass on to the customer. I don't want to do that, but I can't keep absorbing it."

Gallant said the last time he increased prices was two years ago, shortly after completing a major renovation to the restaurant.

Since that time, the cost of some food items he buys has shot up. The price of the cheese he uses for pizza, for instance, recently increased by18 cents per kilogram, translating to thousands of dollars a year.

Product distributors have also taken a hit on fuel costs to deliver food to the restaurants. In turn, the companies often have to pass those extra costs along to restaurant owners.

Chad Mann, director of finance for ADL in Summerside, said there will be a modest cost increase this year of 1.5 per cent for the milk used in butter, yogurt, ice cream and cheese. Comparatively, he said, inflation on other foods averaged more than four per cent in the past year.

ADL's food division distributes to most local restaurants, and often faces many of the same cost challenges.

"Right now there's a lot of inflationary pressures in the food system in general, due to fuel prices and energy prices," said Mann. "Cost of feed...would be a large portion. If the commodity prices for feed to service the herds are going up, that would transfer into the pricing of the finished product for the milk."

Gallant and other restaurant owners have adopted a strategy of locking in food purchases when costs are low.

The Brother's Two restaurant, for example, gets tips from its suppliers when they know the cost of particular items is set to increase.

Restaurant manager Sheila Bell said price increases are sometimes unavoidable if certain products take a major cost jump, but most customers seem to understand.

"Last summer red peppers tripled in price, so all of our menu items that had four ounces of red peppers, we would put three ounces of green and one ounce of red. We're always making menu adjustments according to the food costs," said Bell. "We might increase prices (by) a dollar for a menu item, but we wouldn't go higher than that. We'd probably discontinue an item if we couldn't get the food costs we're looking for out of it."

i can remember the good old days of my parents getting a micheals 18" pizza and a pop for $18.18, but now its what for a 18" -$30.00 buy itself. Now having my own family and knowing most of our friends financial situation its much more financially smart to go through a pizza place like Randy's. We have tried all of the other places and i find that Randy's is the most similar to Micheals but has much better prices. What we need in summerside is a place that is not pizza, chinese food, or fast food, a nice family restaurant that serves a upper class but sensibly priced menu. An Italian restuarant or lebanese..something to switch it up... PS - Micheals Restaurant looks closed at night if your not looking directly at the building so dark from outside of building...

always enjoyed Micheals pizza but the high prices have put their pizza out of reach when we are thinking of feeding more than 2 people, I believe if they reduced prices they could increase profits by volume sold and probably put other establishments out of business! they do have the best pizza but.....

I always used to love getting Lasagna from Michaels due to the rising increase in cost I stopped buying lasagna - met Robert and told him that a couple of years ago - he gave me a menu and off we went - looking at the menu I realized the prices were still too high for my pocket book - I am not big on pizza's anywhere but a family member of mine who is home often loves Michaels - we shop elsewhere because of the price - sad but true My suggestion to Robert is if you want the people find a way to compensate on your end and give us a better price because I will go elsewhere because financially it is better for me - I had a lasagna recently at Dino's and though it may not have been quite as good as Michael's it was tasty and eating it I didn't have to be concerned about the money I spent - it was reasonable & staff was awesome Solution - Find a way to keep Michaels in line with other Pizza Shops in price and Michaels will have more business - many people I have spoke to feel the same way - we just don't have the money to pay the asking price for food though it's great tasting Unless someone is going to pay my bill they don't have the right to criticize whwere I choose to spend my money for food

Anyone with half a brain should see that the Micheals product are made from quality toppings and dough. Quality ingredients = higher price . I would sooner eat frozen store bought than the garbage others sell as pizza.

In my mind Michael's has the best pizza on the Island, but like most people I can't afford to feed my family there. I remember when it was just a nice, small joint to order a good pizza from. I am sure it was a good idea to renovate into a full retaurant, but the price increases have sent many people to other places. Sometimes smaller is better....justsayin

Michaels is by far the best resteraunt in town! You may be able to get double of something somewhere else but the quality and taste is no where near how good michaels is! I will always be a costumer there ! I totally understand why he has to raise prices if he did his buisness would hurt .

I enjoy michaels alot, but when they raised the prices two years ago I stopped ordering from there. I still get a slice here and there but i will never order a full meal from there. It is better pizza but im not going to pay almost double the price of every other place in town. (i dont mind spending extra but its insane the price difference now!). Gotta give your head a shake man, this is'nt alberta

Love Michaels pizza and enjoy it when I'm home to visit but last time we spent almost $50 on one pizza? Left a sour taste in our mouths. Better off buying our own ingredients and making them homemade than lining the pockets of a greedy pizza shop owner.

My little guy loves michaels pizza,he would sooner go there than McDonalds, for $5.00 he gets a big slice of pizza and a pop, however i think Michaels should offer more specials with there 12" and 18" pizza. I have paid over $30 for a pizza which is very expensive compared to the competion now. I hate to see prices climb even more but we do have to understand you cant run a business for nothing.

I agree with JUSTMYOPINION. Michael's is by the far the best pizza in town, and I love to get a slice at lunch. But when it comes to ordering a pizza for my family, I can't justify spending the extra money at Michael's when Dino's offers a much better deal.

I for one think Michael's prices are already much higher than the competition. I love Michael's but can almost double my order some where else for the same price. Is there really a need for a 5 percent increase?
