SUMMERSIDE - A Summerside tradition extending back more than half a century will be undergoing some changes beginning this weekend.

The Summerside Lobster Carnival will be the focus of a think tank beginning as stakeholders and interested groups and organizations meet to lay plans for a new direction for the future.

Coun. Vance Bridges, well known for his long association and work with the Summerside Lobster Carnival, said it seems as though changes are needed to keep the yearly event successful. He said a focus session will be held Saturday.

"We've engaged a facilitator and we've invited interested parties and stakeholders."

The Summerside Rotary Club and the Summerside Legion are the prime organizers of the event. They have invited the city of Summerside, Tourism Summerside, Downtown Summerside Inc. and a number of other areas.

"We want people to come in and sit down and review what we've been doing," he said. "Hopefully this will be the start of perhaps some longer term planning for the whole event. We'll see if we can improve it and maybe start some new events and what we can do to improve it with the input we get."

Bridges said he expects the 2009 edition of the Summerside Lobster Carnival to see some benefits from this discussion.

"It has an application for this season, absolutely," he said.

Bridges wouldn't speculate how the Summerside Lobster Carnival could change, saying that will be determined by what is discussed by the stakeholders and others.
