Canada West advances to face U.S. in final

SUMMERSIDE -- Canada West will take on the United States in the gold-medal game at the 2009 World Junior 'A' Hockey Challenge on Sunday at 5 p.m.

Canada West scored five unanswered second-period goals to open up a 7-1 lead en route to a 9-1 thumping of Canada East in a semifinal game Friday night. In the afternoon semifinal, the United States doubled Russia 6-3.

Russia and Canada East will play for the bronze medal on Sunday at 12 noon.

Cody Kunyk (3-1), Connor Jones (2-3), Kellen Jones (1-1), Mathew Bodie (1-1), Daniel Carr and Cam Reid scored for Canada West. Wes McLeod added four assists and John Dunbar had a single helper.

Jeff Vanderlugt, assisted by Brock Higgs and Kyle Just, netted Canada East's lone goal.

Canada West led 2-1 after one period and took a 7-1 advantage into the second intermission.

Winning goaltender Sean Bonar stopped 32 of 33 shots, including the first six shots of the game. Canada East starter Matt Ginn was relieved by Jordan Ruby following Canada West's fourth goal at 2:59 of the third period. Canada West finished with 43 shots.

Belarus and Sweden will meet in the fifth-place game Saturday at 7 p.m.
