SUMMERSIDE - One of the fastest-growing dance forms in Canada will get special treatment in Summerside.
The College of Piping will be hosting a series of workshops in traditional Irish dance April 4 and 5.
All of the classes will be taught by Irish dance instructor, Shawn Silver, from St. John's, N.L.
A professional Irish dancer and instructor, Silver received his master dance training in Dublin, Ireland, with numerous world champion dancers, including cast members of the acclaimed production of "Riverdance".
Since 1982, Silver has worked in various capacities in Canadian dance, film, music video, television and stage production. In addition to dance instruction and choreography, acting, location and set design, he has also worked as a model for a variety of print and television advertising campaigns.
Highlights of Silver's career include choreographing and performing for Mary Jane Lamond's award-winning Canadian hit "The Stepping Song (Suas É)" and video; feature performances for the Juno Awards, Canada AM, the History Channel, and CBC; and performances with principal dancers from "Riverdance," "Lord of the Dance," and "Magic of the Dance" in both Newfoundland and Ireland.
In 2008, Silver became director of "The Magic of Ireland," Canada's only international Irish dance touring production.
Silver now runs iDANCE, considered to be Newfoundland and Labrador's premiere centre of Irish dance. Established in 2002, the company is dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional forms of Irish dance in Canada and around the world.
This series of workshops is being offered by the College of Piping to the general public, as well as members of the professional dance community.
Classes for dancers aged eight years and older are being offered over the course of two days, at three different levels: beginner ($30), intermediate (3 to 5 years of step-dance experience, $30), and Advanced (5+ years of step-dance experience, $50).
Special workshops also include a parent 'n' child class (children aged 3 to 5 years, $15), children's class (4 to 7 years, $15) and an adult-only "Irish dance for fun 'n' fitness" class (17 years and older, $10).
