SUMMERSIDE - The Prince County Woodcarvers Guild has mounted an exhibition called "Creations in Wood" at Eptek Art and Culture Centre in Summerside. The official opening will take place 2 p.m. Sunday.
Over 80 birds and mammals, as well as a few objects, have been arranged in display cases or along a man-made beach. The sandy shore is complete with piping plovers and great blue herons, including one full-size heron. Waterfowl are positioned down the centre of the gallery and almost a dozen golden retrievers are frolicking along one wall. The exhibit also includes a gaggle of geese, several songbirds and birds of prey - which only look real.
A special display interprets some of the steps in the production of these pieces. The exhibit also includes novelty pieces such as a quill and inkwell, a book, a "patchwork" giraffe, and the group's hand-carved sign.
Many of the carvers will be on hand Sunday to discuss their creative pastime.
There is no admission fee charged for the opening. The exhibition remains at Eptek Centre through December and January with carving demonstrations planned for each month.
